There are a few theories about why so many baby girls are abandoned. Current research focuses on the pressure by the elderly placed on young pregnant women and their husbands. Here is an excellent article which explains the situation:

Seems like the attitude towards girls in China may be slowly and grudgingly changing for the better. Please pray for the infant girls who are abandoned for any reason and for those who are not yet born.
